NYC Dance Places Website Adds NYSCA Subsidy Search Function to Serve Dance Community

February 26, 2004

(New York, N.Y.) — A website enhancement now enables dancers and choreographers to find New York State Council on the Arts-subsidized rehearsal spaces in New York City by clicking a button on the home page. www.nycdancespaces.org is a web-based resource program of Exploring the Metropolis, the non-profit sponsor. It enables users to search the free database for dance studios currently receiving NYSCA rehearsal space subsidy.

"Based on our discussions with the NYSCA Dance Panel, we realized there was a need for better access to this information from the Home Page," said Eugenie C. Cowan, Director of Exploring the Metropolis. "The NYSCA subsidy program is a wonderful service to the dance community, and we are pleased to help them get the word out."

Through the NYSCA program, certain non-profit dance facilities provide low-cost rehearsal space for dancers and choreographers. Each participating rehearsal facility in the program must offer a minimum of 1,000 hours of rehearsal time per year and must charge no more than $10 per hour for the subsidized rehearsal time.

By visiting www.nycdancespaces.org and clicking on "Rehearsal", a 'NYSCA-subsidized rehearsal space' checkbox appears. Users can then search for NYSCA-subsidized spaces city-wide, or within a specific borough.

"NYSCA is a strong champion of our web-based programs for performing artists," said Ms. Cowan. "This is a terrific example of non-profit partnering with public funding to serve the creative community."

Exploring the Metropolis, a non-profit arts service organization, identifies and helps create workspaces for the performing arts. Its other web-based resource programs for artists include www.nycmusicplaces.org. Details about the organization and its programs are available at www.xtmnyc.org.
